The Pillars of Hercules
A highlight of this tour is a visit to The Pillars of Hercules. From this vantage point, you can admire breathtaking views of North Africa, particularly Morocco. You will also witness the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, which marks the sole entrance to the Mediterranean. Situated above Europe Point, it is the southernmost point of Europe.
St Michael's Cave
Next, we explore St Michael’s Cave, a natural wonder that draws thousands of visitors annually. The cave's vast chambers are easily accessible with minimal steps. This stunning formation was created over millions of years as rainwater seeped through limestone, forming weak carbonic acid that gradually dissolved the rock.
In 2021, St Michael's Cave unveiled 'The Awakening,' a state-of-the-art lighting installation designed to enhance the cave's natural splendor. This immersive experience combines light and sound to showcase the cave's ancient formations, illuminating their hidden stories and historical layers.
Skywalk Glass Viewing Platform
Our journey then takes us to the top of the Rock, where two exciting attractions await: The Skywalk and the Barbary macaque monkeys. The Skywalk, once a military lookout, is now a modern glass platform offering breathtaking 360º views of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean.
Ape's Den
A short walk from the Skywalk brings us to the Upper Apes Den, home to the famous Barbary macaque monkeys. Unique to Europe, these monkeys reside in Gibraltar's upper rock nature reserve. Currently, there are over 200 monkeys in six groups. According to legend, during World War II, Prime Minister Winston Churchill ordered the population to be replenished when it dwindled to just seven, believing their presence ensured British sovereignty over Gibraltar.
Windsor Suspension Bridge
From the Rock, we proceed to the Windsor Suspension Bridge. Spanning 71 meters across a 50-meter-deep gorge, this impressive structure offers magnificent views of the strait, bay, and city.
Moorish Castle and Old Town of Gibraltar
As we descend from the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, we'll pass the exterior of the Moorish Castle. This medieval fortress, with its battle-scarred walls, stands as a testament to the historical conflicts between the Moors and the Spanish. Originally built in 1160 CE, the castle was sacked by the Spanish between 1309 and 1333. It was later reconstructed in the 14th century by Abu-l-Hasan. You'll have the opportunity to observe the cannonball marks that tell the castle's turbulent history.
Our tour concludes with a drive through the old town of Gibraltar. If you wish to explore further, we can provide you with a map and guide to the pedestrian areas of town and directions to return to your destination.
