Gibraltar Tour by Inside-Out Rock Tours

The Standard Tour consists of 4 stops which takes around 1hr 45mins

  • Pillars of Hercules
  • St Michael's Cave
  • Top of the Rock with Skywalk & Monkeys
  • The Great Siege Tunnels

Pillars of Hercules

One stop on this tour is the Pillars of Hercules. From here, you can enjoy views of North Africa and Morocco. You'll see where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, which is the only entrance to the Mediterranean. This viewpoint is above Europa Point, the southernmost tip of Europe.

St Michael's Cave

The next stop is St Michael's Cave, which attracts thousands of visitors every year. The cave features large caverns with easy access. This natural wonder was formed by rainwater seeping through limestone, turning into weak carbonic acid that dissolved the rock over millions of years.

In 2021, St Michael's Cave introduced a new lighting system called The Awakening, enhancing the cave's natural beauty. This light and sound installation brings the ancient cavern to life, revealing its hidden stories.

Top of the Rock - Skywalk and Monkeys

Next, we'll head to the top of the Rock for two activities: visiting the Skywalk and seeing the monkeys. The Skywalk is a former military lookout that has been transformed into a glass platform offering stunning 360º views across the Mediterranean.

A short walk from the Skywalk, we'll visit the famous monkeys at Upper Apes Den. The Barbary Macaque apes are the only ones found in Europe and live in Gibraltar's upper rock nature reserve. There are over 200 apes in six packs. According to legend, when their numbers dropped to seven in 1942, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill ordered their population to be replenished, believing that as long as the apes remained, Gibraltar would stay under British rule.

The Great Siege Tunnels

From the top of the Rock, we'll drive to the north side to visit the Great Siege Tunnels. These tunnels were carved by hand during the Great Siege (1779-1783) to defend Gibraltar against Spanish and French forces. The site offers a deep dive into Gibraltar's history under siege.

Moorish Castle and Old Town of Gibraltar

On our way down from the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, we'll see the Moorish Castle. This medieval fortification, with its buildings, stands on the eastern side of the Rock. Built in 1160 CE and later rebuilt in the 14th century, the castle bears cannonball marks from battles between the Moors and the Spanish.

As we exit the nature reserve, we'll drive through the old town of Gibraltar.
